China's Foreign Ministry announced on Friday it will sanction United States House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her family following her official visit to Taiwan, which has sparked fresh tensions between Beijing and Washington. Pelosi will arguably become the highest ranking official from the US to be barred from entering China once the decision is realized.

Pelosi carried out a formal two-day visit to Taiwan earlier this week despite Beijing's warnings against her plans. Responding to the "provocations," China has begun military drills in the waters surrounding Taiwan that are expected to be finished on Sunday. Officials worldwide called for the relaxation of tensions, as some of the missiles fired by Chinese forces ended up in the Taiwan strait as well as Japan's exclusive economic zone.

The Chinese government later added it would respond with additional measures after Pelosi's visit to Taiwan.
