China: Taiwan drills response to provocations

EPA-EFE/WU HAO

The Chinese Foreign Ministry's spokesperson Wang Wenbin described on Thursday his country's military drills around Taiwan as a "powerful response" to the "provocations" staged by those seeking the island's independence.

Speaking at a press conference, Wang added the exercise should also be a "serious warning" to all external parties trying to interfere in the matter. He also insisted that China's actions do not deviate from the international law.

The drills came after China imposed sanctions on several United States military production companies over, among other things, Washington's sales of weapons to Taiwan.
