Cyberattacks hit firms, institutions in Europe

EPA / JULIAN STRATENSCHULTE

The Ukrainian government, Russian oil giant PAO Rosneft, advertising firm WPP Plc and many other entities said on Tuesday that they suffered attacks online with malware. A.P. Møller – Mærsk A/S, commonly known as Maersk Group and French Saint-Gobain SA were among the companies affected, as was the Borysply International Airport in Kyiv, threatening delays. The Eastern European country reported the computer system in the government headquarters was blocked, before the wave turned west.

Maersk Line cited it was attacked by a virus. The British Parliament has revealed on June 24 a failed campaign targeted lawmakers' emails and the information system. So-called WannaCry, the latest worldwide cyberattack, affected computers in 150 countries in May. The National Bank of Ukraine was one of the targets in the current malware offensive, which also struck the system managing the electricity grid, as well as some other banks.
