Democrats in the House of Representatives are expected to file a resolution on Friday aimed at blocking the United States President Donald Trump's national emergency declaration, the AP reported.
"We are planning to introduce it on Friday morning," said a representative from Texas, Joaquin Castro, in a letter to other congressional offices. Castro, who is Congressional Hispanic Caucus chairman, is leading the efforts on the measure. The resolution is expected to pass the House, as it is run by the Democrats, and then move to the Republican-controlled Senate where it might pass if enough GOP members support it. Trump, however, promised to veto the measure.
The US president declared the national emergency in order to reallocate funds for the construction of the barrier between the US and Mexico. The move was criticized by the Democrats and 16 states filed a lawsuit earlier this week against the national emergency declaration.
