The Walt Disney Company is set to acquire a $1.5 billion equity stake in game developer Epic Games, the filmaker's CEO Bob Iger (pictured) revealed on Wednesday during an interview with CNBC.

Iger referred to this investment as Disney's "biggest foray" into the gaming industry. The two companies will join forces to develop a new gaming universe that allows users to "play, watch, shop and engage with content, characters and stories from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar and more."

Previously, Disney and Epic Games have collaborated on projects such as "The Nightmare Before Christmas," "Tron," and bringing characters into Fortnite.
