ECB's Lane: May decision will depend on inflation outlook

European Central Bank (ECB) Chief Economist Philip Lane stated in an interview with Cyprus News Agency published on Thursday that inflation outlook will be one of the factors to influence the central bank's monetary decision in May.

"The focus should be on understanding every data point that comes in," Lane argued, explaining that it is premature to predict the central bank's next move before the policymakers have had a chance to observe key data.

"This is some reversal of that trend, but in the context of a fairly negative trend," Lane said with reference to OPEC+'s decision to slash crude output this year, explaining that the fundamental issue is how the rest of the economy will react to the energy dynamic.
