China's Central People's Government Liaison Office in Hong Kong remarked on Tuesday the changes to the region's electoral system Beijing had adopted would open a "new chapter" and enhance the further development of democracy on the island.
The office stated the adapted legislation would ensure the principle of "patriots administering Hong Kong" and improve the "one country, two systems" rule. It added Beijing had "always been propelling and safeguarding" the region's democracy and that these amendments showed its dedication to that goal.
The new regulations many interpret as China's attempt to gain more influence in the selection of candidates for Hong Kong's Legislative Council (LegCo). The region's Chief Executive Carrie Lam defended the changes, saying that any "patriot loyal to Hong Kong" would be able to take part in elections.
