OPEC denies reports on scouting Guyana

EPA-EFE/FLORIAN WIESER

The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) denied on Tuesday reports which had claimed that the cartel was seeking to make Guyana its newest member.

"In view of recent reports about Guyana being invited to become a Member of OPEC, while the Organization recognizes that Guyana is an emerging player in the international oil market with significant potential, OPEC has not invited Guyana to become a Member of the Organization," it was written in a statement.

Previously, Guyana said it has no plans to join OPEC at present, as it wants to focus on production and profit maximization in the short term.
