United States National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said on Thursday that new sanctions will be imposed against North Korea. The decision comes as Pyongyang continues to develop its nuclear weapons program.

Speaking to a conference in Seoul, Sullivan said: "We have a new set of sanctions measures coming forward as we speak." He added that Washington wants to negotiate with Pyongyang in an effort to achieve denuclearization but that North Korea "has rejected this sincere outreach."

North Korea's recent missile activity has made Japan uneasy after a North Korean ballistic missile landed near its waters. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will meet Biden next year to discuss strengthening security relations between the two countries.
