Friedrich Merz's CDU/CSU alliance is set to come out on top in the German general election with 29% of the vote, slightly below the 31% projected in polls, an exit poll by ARD1 showed on Sunday.
The far-right Alternative fuer Deutschland (AfD) is on course to come in second with 19.5%, also below the earlier forecast 22%.
Meanwhile, Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democratic Party (SPD) is expected to perform slightly better than expected, winning 16.5% of the vote. Greens, led by Economy Minister Robert Habeck are seen coming in fourth with 13.5%. The Left is on course to secure 9%, followed by ex-Finance Minister Christian Lindner's Free Democratic Party (FDP) and left-wing Buendnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) and at 4.9% and 4.7%, respectively.
