The Formula 1 announced on Wednesday that the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix that was scheduled to take place this weekend has been canceled over heavy flooding in the region.

"The decision has been taken because it is not possible to safely hold the event for our fans, the teams and our personnel and it is the right and responsible thing to do given the situation faced by towns and cities in the region," Formula 1 said in a statement.

According to Italian media reports, six people have died and around 5,000 were forced to be evacuated after heavy storms in the northern Italian region caused flooding and landslides.
