The London Fire Brigade reported on Friday that dozens of firefighters are working to contain a large blaze at an electrical substation in Hayes, West London. The blaze has forced the closure of Heathrow Airport, Europe's busiest hub.
According to the firefighters, part of a transformer is still burning, and disruption in the area is expected to worsen. The fire, which broke out late Thursday, triggered a major power outage that shut down operations at Heathrow, impacting hundreds of flights worldwide.
Assistant Commissioner Pat Goulbourne said previously that firefighters are "working tirelessly in challenging conditions" to bring the fire under control. Crews from Hayes, Heathrow, and surrounding stations remain on site.
