Former United States President Jimmy Carter has passed away, aged 100, his son Chip Carter confirmed. According to the announcement, Carter died at his home in Plains, Georgia.
Carter served as the 39th president from 1977 to 1981, succeeding Gerald Ford. A Democrat, Carter lost his 1980 re-election bid to the Republican candidate Ronald Reagan. He became the longest-lived US president and the first to reach the age of 100.
He was placed in hospice care in 2023 and was suffering from melanoma.
