Georgia's parliament speaker, Shalva Papuashvili, gave the final greenlight to the controversial "foreign agents" bill on Monday that sparked weeks-long nationwide protests.
The speaker signed the bill into law this morning despite concerns that the legislation could hinder the country's prospects of joining the European Union.
The bill, which was passed by the ruling Dream Party in Georgia last month, mandates that organizations, media outlets, and civil groups receiving over 20% of their funding from foreign sources register as foreign agents.
