Venezuelan opposition leader and self-proclaimed interim president Juan Guaido said he was mobilizing thousands of volunteers to help bring American aid into the country, as media reported that two US military planes with humanitarian aid landed in the Colombian town of Cucuta, near the border with Venezuela.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, on the other hand, vowed to keep "unauthorized" aid out and block a so-called US invasion by
deploying troops at the border.
Maduro and Guaido entered in a war of words over the US aid. Guaido told his supporters that the US aid will arrive through Colombia, Brazil and the island of Curacao. He also called the army - which supports Maduro - to allow the aid to pass. Maduro, however, said that aid which he dismissed as "rotten and contaminated food" is an invasion "in disguise" and reinforced border security.
