United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is seeking a deal with Russia, Turkey, and other countries to unlock Ukrainian food exports to world markets to prevent a potential global food shortage, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing diplomats familiar with the matter.
According to the report, Guterres asked Russia to allow some grain shipments from Ukraine in return for helping to facilitate Russian and Belarusian exports of potash fertilizer.
Russia and Belarus are vital suppliers of potash. Belarusian potash, at present, is banned from world markets because of sanctions imposed by the West.
