United States House Oversight and Reform Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings plans to issue a subpoena on Monday requesting US President Donald Trump's financial records from accounting firm Mazars USA LLP, he stated in a memo first published by Politico. Cummings wrote that he took the decision based on the testimony of Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen, who said the president inflated or deflated his total assets as needed in his business dealings. Cohen provided financial statements to corroborate his claims, some of which were written by Mazars.
In the memo, Cummings also condemned Republican Representative Jim Jordan, ranking member of the committee, for writing directly to Mazars in March and urging the company not to cooperate with the panel. Jordan argued that the investigation into Trump's finances has no legislative purpose but instead "seems to seek information to embarrass a private individual." Cummings called Jordan's actions "unprecedented" and added the panel has "broad latitude to investigate any matter at any time" under House rules.
