Both Turkey and France condemned an incident in which an Israeli tank fired at United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) peacekeepers.
Turkey, which contributes to the UNIFIL Maritime Task Force with one corvette/frigate and five personnel stationed at UNIFIL's headquarters, said the attack is a "manifestation" of Israel's "perception that its crimes can go unpunished" and called on the international community to ensure that Israel abides by international law. After hearing about the incident, France expressed its "deep concern" and said it is "waiting for explanations from the Israeli authorities."
On Thursday morning, an Israeli Merkava tank fired at an observation tower at UNIFIL's main headquarters in Naqoura, causing two peacekeepers to fall and suffer minor injuries.
