Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who was on a week-long vacation and was planning to start working on Monday, tested positive for COVID-19, his office announced on Sunday.
The prime minister experienced a slight fever and cough on August 20, after which he decided to go and get tested on Sunday morning, a Cabinet spokesperson said. Kishida is currently receiving treatment and recovering at his official residency.
In the past two months, Japan has experienced a significant resurgence in COVID-19 cases, with the government reportedly aiming to roll out a vaccine that will specifically target the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in October.
