Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida called on Monday for the reform of the United Nations (UN) Security Council (UNSC) as the trust in one of its permanent members, Russia, has been "lost" amid that country's military interventions in Ukraine.

Speaking to the National Diet about the ongoing situation in Ukraine, Kishida pointed out that Russia's "outrageous act" demonstrated the need for a new framework that would replace the UNSC. He also stressed Tokyo's readiness to work with other countries that are also calling for a reform of the body, such as France.

The UNSC has five permanent members, China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The current non-permanent members are Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana, India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico, Norway, and the United Arab Emirates.
