Judge temporarily blocks Trump's change on birthright citizenship

EPA-EFE/JUSTIN LANE

A United States federal judge temporarily blocked President Donald Trump's decision to end granting birthright citizenship to children born in the country.

US District Judge John C. Coughenour called the move "blatantly unconstitutional" in a ruling in a case filed by the states of Washington, Arizona, Illinois and Oregon, which argued that the 14th Amendment guarantees birthright citizenship to all people born in the US.

On the day of his inauguration, Trump signed an executive order to stop giving citizenship to children born in the country from February 19, 2025, if their mother was "unlawfully present" in the US and their father was not a citizen or "lawful permanent resident," as well as if a mother's presence in the country was "lawful but temporary" and the father was not a citizen or permanent resident.
