Julian Assange sentenced to 50 weeks in prison

Jualian Assange, the founder and director of Wikileaks, has been sentenced to 50 weeks in prison in the United Kingdom for violating bail conditions in 2012, the Associated Press reported on Wednesday. Assange skipped bail seven years ago to avoid being extradited to Sweden on charges of rape and sexual assault. Assange took refuge in the embassy of Ecuador in London where he stayed until recently. Due to alleged bad conduct, Assange's asylum in the embassy was withdrawn.

Apart from the charges he faces in Sweden, Assange is also wanted in the United States for publishing classified documents related to the US government operations in the Middle East.

On Thursday, a hearing will be held regarding his potential extradition to the US.
