Jury rules Google's app store monopoly violates US laws

EPA-EFE/WALLACE WOON

A federal jury in the United States unanimously ruled that Alphabet Inc.'s management of the Google Play app store constitutes an illegal monopoly.

The plaintiff, Epic Games, was found to have suffered injury as a result of Google's actions, bringing a conclusion to the antitrust lawsuit the Fortnite maker filed in August 2020.

The verdict, delivered after a four-week-long trial, established that the tech giant also holds monopoly power in the in-app billing service market. It further determined that the company engaged in anticompetitive practices, including, but not limited to: commercial partnerships with gaming companies and agreements with smartphone manufacturers.
