Kuwaiti state television announced on Saturday the death of the Emir Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah at the age of 86. "With great sadness and sorrow, we mourn...the death of Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, emir of the State of Kuwait," a statement issued by the state-run broadcaster said.
Sheikh Nawaf, who ascended to the throne in September 2020 following the death of his half-brother, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, in the United States, had been facing health problems. In late November, it was reported that he was admitted to hospital after a medical emergency.
The emir's death marks an important moment in Kuwait's history as it prepares to transition into a period of regional complexities and internal challenges.
