Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was declared the winner in Venezuela’s presidential election with 51.2% of the vote, according to the country's electoral council.
Maduro won his third six-year term, the head of the National Electoral Council (CNE), Elvis Amoroso, announced, after 80% of the votes had been counted, marking an irreversible trend. Meanwhile, 44.2% of the vote went to the opposition candidate, Edmundo Gonzales.
Previously, the Venezuelan opposition called on campaign representatives and voters nationwide to stay at polling stations to ensure the accuracy of the vote count, amid fears the government would attempt to steal the vote.
