EU wants to end Russian gas dependency by 2027-end

The European Commission presented on Tuesday a plan on how it will completely abandon Russian energy sources. While the REPowerEU Plan, launched in 2022, helped the European Union reduce Russian gas imports to 19%, in 2024 there was an uptick.

In a roadmap, the EC revealed that all imports of gas coming from Russia will be halted by the end of 2027 "by improving the transparency, monitoring and traceability of Russian gas across the EU markets." Meanwhile, when it comes to oil, the EC aims to "take fresh action to address Russia's 'shadow fleet' (vessels employed by Russia to evade sanctions) transporting oil."

Finally, the EU will also restrict new supply contracts co-signed by the Euratom Supply Agency for uranium, enriched uranium and other nuclear materials deriving from Russia. The bloc underlined that these actions will "reduce the security risks" in the EU.
