United Kingdom Prime Minister Theresa May apologized on Thursday after the UK Home Office sent nearly 100 deportation letters to European Union citizens in Britain ordering them to leave the country within a month. May called the incident an "unfortunate error" by the Home Office.
"I understand they moved quickly to contact the people who had received these letters and assure them they were not going to be deported and I want to assure EU nationals here in the UK that their rights and status in the UK have not changed," May pointed out. Earlier, the UK prime minister claimed EU nationals living in the UK will be able to remain in the country for good even after Brexit as they will have the option to gain the "settled status."
On Wednesday, a Finnish national took to social media to complain about a deportation letter she received from the UK government. A spokesperson for the Home Office noted "a limited number" of such letters were mistakenly sent and added the government is looking into why it happened.
