United States House Speaker Kevin McCarthy stated on Tuesday after the second meeting with President Joe Biden on the debt ceiling that "it is possible to get a deal by the end of the week."
McCarthy's remarks came minutes after a report by NBC claimed that Biden was shortening his Asia tour in order to focus on the critical negotiations, a move that has been regarded as a possible indication that a breakthrough is near.
Finally, in the same press conference, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell reaffirmed he knows that the government is "not going to default." According to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, the debt limit could be reached in early June "and potentially as soon as June 1."
