Myanmar quake death toll reaches 1,644, junta says

A powerful earthquake in Myanmar has killed at least 1,644 people, rising from an earlier count of 1,002, the military junta said Saturday.

The 7.7-magnitude quake struck the nation earlier in the week, leaving at least 139 people still missing as search efforts continue.

The disaster also caused destruction in neighboring Thailand. A partially built skyscraper in Bangkok collapsed, killing at least nine people, according to AFP.
