The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) deployed troops to a demilitarized buffer zone along the Golan Heights on Sunday following unrest in Syria, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office announced.

Netanyahu said he ordered the operation on Saturday, with the support of Defense Minister Israel Katz and the cabinet, to protect the border area. He described this move as a temporary measure, adding that his country's forces will remain as long as needed to ensure regional stability.

The move came after rebel forces captured parts of Damascus and advanced through southwestern Syria.
