The American Boeing C-40C plane carrying House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on board landed on Tuesday at Taipei's Songshan Airport in Taiwan, as tensions between Washington and Beijing continued to increase.
By making this visit, Pelosi has become the first leader of the House of Representatives that has visited Taiwan since 1997. However, China promised earlier that "serious consequences" would follow her decision. The Chinese military will hold exercises near Taiwan from August 4 through August 7, state media later confirmed.
According to reports from Chinese state media, the country's Su-35 fighter jets crossed Taiwan Strait as Pelosi's plane landed in Taipei. Meanwhile, Pelosi was seen safely entering the airport's premises with her crew and delivered an official statement to Taiwan's representatives.
