Pelosi: Taiwan visit honors US commitment to democracy

EPA-EFE/TAIWAN MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

After landing in Taiwan earlier today, United States House Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued a formal statement noting that her visit honors the government's support toward the island's democracy.

"Our discussions with Taiwan leadership will focus on reaffirming our support for our partner and on promoting our shared interests, including advancing a free and open Indo-Pacific region," Pelosi added, asserting that her visit hasn't breached any US-China bilateral agreements.

The visit "in no way contradicts longstanding US policy, guided by the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, US-China Joint Communiques and the Six Assurances," the statement concluded.
