Supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who reject the election of Lula da Silva as the country's new president, stormed the complex of the Brazilian National Congress, the nation's highest court as well as the presidential palace on Sunday.

Hundreds of demonstrators climbed the ramp, breaking the security blockade outside the premises, although it was not immediately clear whether the group managed to enter the buildings. According to local media reports, the police used pepper spray to try and keep the protesters under control.

The incident occurred just one week after Lula took office on January 1 and came almost exactly two years after the backers of Bolsonaro's ally, former United States President Donald Trump, entered the US Capitol building.
