Protests erupted in Georgia on Thursday when thousands of citizens blocked streets in Tbilisi after Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced that the government decided to delay talks on the European Union accession until 2028.
Kobakhidze accused the European Parliament and "some European politicians" of "blackmail" after the EP adopted a resolution rejecting the results of Georgia parliamentary elections held on October 26, claiming "significant irregularities" and calling for new elections within a year.
However, the prime minister said that his government will keep implementing reforms, ensuring that "by 2028, Georgia will be more prepared than any other candidate country to open accession talks with Brussels and become a member state in 2030."
