South Korean Ambassador to Australia Lee Jong-sup (pictured) resigned on Friday, less than a month after stepping up to the position, amid a mounting public uproar over his appointment that came despite him being subject to an investigation, Yonhap reported.

Lee faced public scrutiny since he was appointed as the ambassador to Australia, seeing as how he was banned from leaving the country due to an investigation led against him for his alleged meddling in an internal military probe into a South Korean marine's death last year. Lee, having been the defense minister at the time, supposedly advised one of the country's military officials to withhold information relevant to the death that was being investigated in 2023.

Lee stated that he will remain in Seoul to "respond to the remainder of the procedures diligently."
