The South Korean National Assembly voted on Saturday to approve the motion seeking to remove President Yoon Suk-yeol from office following the short-lived martial law declaration. The final decision will be made by the Constitutional Court within 180 days.
The impeachment motion against the president passed with 204 votes in favor, 85 opposed, 3 abstentions, and 8 invalid ballots. The ruling People Power Party noted it would take part in the vote but maintained a negative stance on the impeachment. However, the results revealed that 12 lawmakers from the ruling party voted in favor of the impeachment.
Yoon becomes the second sitting president of South Korea to be removed from office through an impeachment vote, following the 2016 corruption scandal that led to the ousting of Park Geun-hye. In 2004, South Korea's ninth president, Roh Moo-hyun, also faced an impeachment vote, which was later overturned by the Constitutional Court after a parliamentary election revealed overwhelming support for the president.
