The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) expressed its concerns on Friday over the current situation at the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant in Ukraine, calling it "untenable".
IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi stressed that "Ukrainian staff are operating the facility under extremely stressful conditions while the site is under the control of Russian armed forces." He underlined that the staff needs to be able to perform their "safety and security duties...free of undue pressure."
Grossi continues his efforts to organize an international mission that would be led by IAEA and would conduct "essential nuclear safety, security and safeguards activities" as "physical integrity of nuclear facilities" along with "secure off-site power supplies" in Ukraine have been compromised since the start of the conflict.
