South Africa said it provided evidence to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Tuesday showing how Israel uses hunger as a weapon of war and a means to clear Gaza of its population.
South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola stated that the responsibility to punish the crime of "genocide" falls on every country and reiterated that the evidence submitted "demonstrates unequivocally that Israel's genocidal acts are of special intent to commit genocide in the Gaza strip." Lamola also highlighted how his country's approach rests on South Africa's own experience with colonialism and apartheid as well as international law.
In 2023, South Africa sued Israel over "genocide," with the hearings beginning at the start of 2024 and several other countries joining the lawsuit since. So far Israel has failed to heed the three orders aimed at putting a stop to the increasing casualties.
