South Korean National Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun offered on Wednesday his resignation amid the political turmoil that erupted in the country after President Yoon Suk-yeol's declaration of what turned out to be a short-lived martial law.
In a text message sent to the media, Kim apologized for the events and took responsibility for his participation in them following the reports he directly suggested the introduction of martial law.
Previously, six South Korean opposition parliamentary parties filed a motion to the National Assembly to impeach Yoon. Meanwhile, several of Yoon's senior aides reportedly resigned over the controversy.
