Stellantis NV is temporarily laying off about 5,400 workers as it halts production at two assembly plants in Canada and Mexico in response to new US tariffs targeting the auto industry. The move affects roughly 4,500 hourly employees at the Windsor Assembly Plant in Ontario and 900 US-based workers at supporting facilities.
The company will suspend operations in Windsor for two weeks and at the Toluca Assembly Plant in Mexico for all of April. While Mexican employees will remain on-site, they will not manufacture vehicles due to contractual terms.
In an internal memo, Stellantis North America chief Antonio Filosa linked the decision directly to President Donald Trump's 25% automotive tariffs, which took effect Thursday. "We are continuing to assess the medium- and long-term effects of these tariffs on our operations, but also have decided to take some immediate actions," Filosa said. The company announced a similar action in Italy.
