Supreme Court to review citizenship question for 2020 census

EPA-EFE / JIM LO SCALZO

The United States Supreme Court agreed on Friday to review the legality of the White House-proposed measure for including a question on citizenship in the next national census. Various media outlets reported that the highest US court will deliberate if the question "Is this person a citizen of the United States?" can be asked during the upcoming census.

Various lower courts have deemed this question illegal or unconstitutional. The US Constitution mandates a census every ten years, and the results compiled through it are used for the allocation of seats in the House of Representatives and the distribution of federal funds.

The justices have agreed to conduct a speedy review of previous court rulings. Arguments on the issue will take place in late April and the decision should be made by late June.
