Turnover in retail sales in Switzerland went up by 0.6% in January on an annual basis in nominal terms, the country's Federal Statistical Office's report revealed on Friday. The figure grew by 0.8% in comparison to last month's reading.
In terms of real turnover, which accounts for inflation, there was a 0.3% year-on-year increase in January 2024. Compared to the previous month, the seasonally adjusted real turnover of retail trade recorded an increase of 0.7%.
The report further reveals that the retail sector, excluding service stations, posted a nominal turnover increase of 0.8% year-on-year in January 2024, translating to a real growth of 0.4%. This segment showed notable performance in different categories: retail sales of food, drinks, and tobacco experienced a nominal increase of 0.3%, despite a real-term decrease of 1.7%.
