The New York Times slapped Microsoft Corporation Inc. and OpenAI Inc. with a lawsuit on Wednesday at the Federal District Court in Manhattan based on the suspicion that its content was used to train artificial intelligence chatbots without the newspaper's approval.
Namely, the media company is seeking to hold Microsoft and OpenAI "responsible for billions of dollars in statutory and actual damages" as a result of "unlawful copyright and use of The Times's uniquely valuable works," and called on the corporations to delete all chatbot models and data which used the newspapers' articles.
"Defendants seek to free-ride on The Times's massive investment in its journalism," the lawsuit said, accusing the two companies of "using The Times's content without payment to create products that substitute for The Times and steal audiences away from it."
