TikTok allegedly plans to disable its app for users in the United States on Sunday, when the federal ban is scheduled to take effect, unless the Supreme Court jumps in to prevent the ban, the Information reported, citing two people familiar with the company's plans.
Rather than allowing people who have already downloaded the app to keep using it, TikTok intends to "abruptly" switch the app off, making the ban's effect immediately evident to all users. Those who attempt to open the app will be greeted by a pop-up message redirecting them to a website containing information about the ban, one of the sources said. Additionally, users will be able to download all of their data, allowing them to retain a record of their personal information, the news agency added.
The social media app faces a ban in the US on January 19 if it doesn't separate from its owner, the Chinese company ByteDance.
