Attorneys with the United States Justice Department agreed that two Treasury Department employees associated with billionaire Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) will have "read-only" access to the sensitive data within the Treasury and won't share it with others working with DOGE.
The two special government employees allowed to see the data are Tom Krause and Marko Elez, according to the court filing. The agreement is yet to be approved by US District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, who is overseeing the case, but after it is signed off on, it will stay in effect until the next hearing in the case, which is set for the end of the month.
The agreement came after federal employee unions filed a lawsuit against the Treasury Department, alleging that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent unlawfully granted DOGE access to the federal government's payment and collections system. The unions claimed that this act violated federal privacy laws.
