Following news reports that talks were halted as Republicans and Democrats failed to find compromise about border security funding, United States President Donald Trump slammed the opposition, saying its negotiators aren't giving realistic proposals.
"It was a very bad week for the Democrats, with the GREAT economic numbers, The Virginia disaster and the State of the Union address. Now, with the terrible offers being made by them to the Border Committee, I actually believe they want a Shutdown. They want a new subject!" he said on Twitter.
The current temporary spending legislation, introduced after a record long government shutdown, expires at midnight on February 15. After scandals involving top Democrats in Virginia, the state's Senate Majority Leader Tommy Norment, a Republican, was found to have been the managing editor of the Virginia Military Institute's 1968 yearbook, which includes so-called blackface photos, Confederate flags and racial slurs.
