Speaking alongside his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Washington, US President Donald Trump expressed hope that the trade between the US and Turkey would reach $100 billion and reduce the trade deficit with the Eurasian nation.
Trump commended Turkey's efforts in fighting terrorism and its role as a global strategic partner and NATO ally, pointing out its rising military spending, which nearly reached 2% of GDP, "unlike many other countries."
"We assured each other that Turkey will uphold what it is supposed to uphold," Trump said cryptically, referring most likely to the permanent ceasefire in northern Syria, brokered by the US.
The US president also briefly turned to the issue of S-400 anti-aircraft weapon system, saying that advisors of both administrations are working to resolve the issue which "creates serious challenges" for Washington.
