United States President Donald Trump is considering recognizing Venezuela's opposition leader and president of the National Assembly Juan Guaido as the legitimate president of the country, CNN reported on Tuesday citing three sources with knowledge of the matter.
Over the weekend, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Washington seeks to "restore democracy" to the South American country as President Nicolas Maduro was sworn in for a second term. "The Maduro regime is illegitimate, and the United States continues to do as we have for the now almost two years of this administration, work diligently to restore a real democracy to that country," the diplomat explained.
Washington recently issued fresh sanctions over corruption in Venezuela, targeting seven individuals and two dozen entities.
