Former United States President and Republican nominee in the 2024 presidential election Donald Trump promised he would impose tariffs on Germany and other European Union countries if elected, adding that the EU treats the US "very badly."
"You know what's very tough? European Union. They treat us so badly, we have a deficit," Trump said during an interview with Bloomberg Editor-In-Chief John Micklethwait and went on to describe his meeting with former German Chancellor Angela Merkel who he said admitted there were no US-made automobiles sold in Germany. The former president added the EU doesn't want anything from the US, including farm products. "We're not gonna have the (deficit) anymore," Trump stressed. "We're gonna put tariffs on them. And you know what they can do? Mercedes will start building in the United States."
"They screwed us on trade... European nations. Then on top of that, they screwed us on military," Trump continued, noting that his tariffs policy will help attract European car manufacturers to the US.
