United Kingdom Cabinet Office Minister Oliver Dowden announced on Thursday that the country has banned Chinese social media app TikTok from all government devices "with immediate effect." Dowden called the action a "precautionary move" and "good cyber hygiene". He also insisted that "our security must always come first."
"Given the particular risk around government devices, which may contain sensitive information, it is both prudent and proportionate to restrict the use of certain apps, particularly when it comes to apps where a large amount of data can be stored and accessed," the minister stressed.
Earlier, several other countries, including the United States, Canada and the European Union took similar actions against the app.
